Ms. Yacoubou, thanks for finding out the good potential from the corn. I see that, some people like and some dislike this idea. But i think if we use that potential in the third world countries who are poor enough to feed their people, specially the children.. i think and i strongly believe that this will be a great effort.

Dear sir,

This is very interesting artical use of zein for coating and drug stabilsation.

Also i want to know the polymer which gives stability to our drug molecule, as our drug molecule is stable at 60-70 deg. C, if we want to make this drug as an thermally stable at 120 deg. Cfor few mins. is it possible. Also can you suggest any such biodegradable polymer. Pl. help me.

   Regards

[...] In November and December 2011, The VRG received a few comments about a December 2010 VRG blog post on zein, a corn protein. In that post, zein was described as “non-allergenic.” http://www.vrg.org/blog/2010/12/13/zein-used-for-shellac-biodegradable-coatings-diapers%E2%80%A6/ [...]

Is there a Zein based shellac like product on the market, to varnish things with?
I don't mean industrially, but as a home product.
Any ideas?
I need to coat something with varnish and don't want to use shellac nor toxic ones.
Thanks.

Ms. Yacoubou, I'm curious who made the determination zein is "non-allergenic", and where I might find the research that supports that determination?

I found this article very interesting and informative; unfortunately, the potential for zein becoming so prevalent (yet completely unlabeled) in our food and non-food supply does not bode well for those who are allergic to, or intolerant of, corn and its derivatives.

This is horrible news for me and my family. It's hard enough to avoid the ubiquitous but hidden cornstarch and citric acid, but it sounds as if zein will be hidden in even more products. If this trend continues, we corn allergy sufferers will have to move to another continent to survive.

The many uses for Zein is NOT good news for all of us who are severely allergic to corn. Worse yet, Zein is not even labeled to warn us that it is in the foods, drugs, products or anything else. Corn allergy is becoming even more common, but is totally ignored by the establishment. In fact, there are some so-called allergy organizations that claim corn allergy is very rare, which is not true. We have made many complaints to them, to no avail. We can't avoid corn if we don't know where it is hidden in all those products, so that keeps us sick all the time with severe allergic reactions. At the very least, corn should be properly labeled for the safety of the corn allergic people.

Thanks for your article and for re-introducing the public to the world of zein. The quality of the product has vastly improved, especially extracting zein from fresh ground corn before any other type of corn processing has occurred. Pricing has become more competitive with shellac as well.
