Many people would be surprised to find a vegetarian dish at a BBQ restaurant that’s not a side or something like grilled cheese – but Hempen Hill BBQ has a plethora of vegetarian dishes, from their Smoked Tofu with soba buckwheat noodles to their “Vicken” Ravioli (roasted vegetable ravioli with artichoke hearts and vegan “chicken” strips.)

A lot of these options are made possible by the Proprietor herself, Kathy Reeder, who is a 20-year vegetarian. It may seem surprising, a vegetarian co-owning a BBQ restaurant, but Kathy simply compares herself to Johnny Depp’s character in the movie “Blow” – “I don’t do my own product.” She does recognize, however, that not everyone is like her, and “it takes all kinds to make the world go round.” As for including vegetarian items on the menu, Kathy says that it was a no-brainer from day one: Hempen Hill BBQ is an extension of her own family life, and vegetarianism is part of that life. The inspiration for the Smoked Tofu recipe even came from her own personal days of camping, so there is a personal touch with many of the vegetarian recipes.

Kathy also credits many of the recipe ideas to their head chef, Jason Vogel, who created many of the vegetarian dishes on the menu and continually meets Kathy’s challenges to create meatless dishes with unconventional ingredients. Vegetarians and vegans come through their restaurant daily, according to Kathy, and all of the vegetarian menu items can be made vegan with a simple request. Other vegetarian menu items include the “Tree Hugger” veggie burger, the Exotic ‘ShroomPasta, and Veggemite – potato and cheddar pierogies, as well as many appetizer options. Hempen Hill BBQ is located in Hagerstown, Maryland, at Fountain Head Plaza.

Purely vegetarian, authentic South and North Indian fare offered in a very casual, friendly environment – this is what defines a dining experience at Sapthagiri in Jersey City, NJ. On a Thursday night, the restaurant was lively and full of patrons, many of whom appeared to be regulars. The restaurant is medium-sized, with enough space for approximately 50 people and some outdoor seating in the front. Sapthagiri offers an extensive, purely vegetarian menu, with many vegan options clearly indicated. If not 100% vegan, various dishes are listed as having a “vegan option available.” The menu also specifies which dishes are gluten-free, low carb and low fat. The staff at Sapthagiri are very compassionate toward vegetarian and vegan eating, which made the experience very comfortable and enjoyable. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very friendly and welcoming, as the owner and waiter cracked jokes with our party and offered very attentive service throughout the duration of our dinner.

Our table ordered a variety of items to share, which made for a fun dining experience. We started with a sample plate as an appetizer. The plate featured an Idly (steamed rice cake), a Vada (fried lentil donut), a Masala Vadla (flat fried donut made with lentils, peanuts, garlic and spices), an Aloo Bonda (potato dumpling coated in chickpea batter), and a Samosa (crispy, flaky crust stuffed with potatoes and green peas).

A feature item on the menu is the Dosa, a thin crepe made from rice and lentils. The dosas were all served with a chutney and sambar (a spicy vegetable stew). The “Mysore Masala Dosa” came stuffed with potatoes, onions, peas, cashew nuts and a spicy sauce, while the “Paper Dosa” (a very long, crispy crepe) was served plain and intended to be ripped and dipped into the chutney or spread with curried potatoes. The Paper Dosa was huge, perfect for sharing and full of crisp flavor. Both Dosa plates were delicious and I enjoyed sampling the various spreads and dips that were served alongside.

In addition to the Dosa, another Indian bread that our table ordered was the Poori (a very fluffy fried whole wheat bread). The Poori was served with a side of channa masala, spiced chick peas. In my opinion, the channa masala was seasoned perfectly – the heat of the dish and its flavorful spices were balanced and complimented each other just right.

An extensive list of South Indian and North Indian curries are also available on the menu. The curry dish I tried featured vegetables cooked in coconut milk with a spicy kick and was served along side a bowl of rice. I enjoyed the spiciness of this dish, though the waiter informed me that he requested it be made at medium spice, so it could have been made even hotter. The waitstaff was very accommodating to any special requests or additions our party asked for.

The variety of authentic Indian spices, flavors and Dosa that I tried at Sapthagiri made for an interesting and enjoyable dining experience. As someone who had limited knowledge of Indian cuisine, I felt that Sapthagiri’s descriptive menu and helpful waitstaff made for an easy and welcoming experience. I will definitely be back to Sapthagiri soon. There are over 100 items on the menu, many of which I have my eye on!

For more information about Sapthagiri, visit their website: http://www.sapthagiri.biz/index.aspx.
I am usually pretty quick to pick favorites when it comes to restaurant entrées, but not with The Land of Kush. As someone who grew up in the south eating barbecue meats and lots of macaroni and cheese, I’d have to say the Land of Kush really hit the spot with their savory, smoky Kush BBQ Ribs and Baked Mac & Cheese. Though the latter does not necessarily taste how I remember, it was buttery and creamy, and I will definitely be going back for seconds. The texture and flavor of the Sweet & Sour Seitan, with its tangy sauce and tender texture, reminded me of the brisket my mom used to make. Both the Ribs and the Seitan were extremely hearty and satisfying and the leftovers tasted great on a sandwich the next day.

The Chick-un Salad Wrap tastes exactly like real chicken, according to my omnivore boyfriend who has ordered it twice. His next favorite were the ribs, which were “good, but not real ribs.” Coming from a boy who grew up in Kansas City and is quick to point out the shortcomings of mock meats, this remark is more positive than it may initially seem.

The Land of Kush does not try too hard to imitate the non-vegan versions the dishes are inspired from. They are careful to extract the natural, wholesome flavor and unique texture of seitan and soy, but with a soul food spin. The Mac & Cheese, as well as many of their entrees, is incomparable with the real thing, which is fortunate, because what they have come up with tastes much better.

For more information about vegan dining options across the US, see the VRG’s national restaurant guide: http://www.vrg.org/restaurant/index.php

The Land of Kush is listed under Baltimore, Maryland.

The VRG has a great directory and listing of vegan- and vegetarian-friendly restaurants in New York: http://www.vrg.org/restaurant/New_York.php. These restaurants are my favorites for affordable, convenient, and tasty vegan dining:

1) Best Mexican: V-Spot
156 5th Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11217
(718) 622-2275

V-Spot is a small restaurant in Park Slope with an amazing range of food – all of it vegan. The menu is Mexican, with some Caribbean and
American influences. There’s also a juice and smoothie bar, and a selection of sinfully sweet and creamy vegan desserts. Every dish is
prepared to perfection, and there are many options that are available gluten-free. V-Spot offers gourmet food that won’t break the bank; their sandwiches and entrees range from $7 to $16, and they’re generous with the portions.

2) Best Chinese: Dao Palate
329 Flatbush Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11217
(718) 638-1995 and
201 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11217
(718) 622-2088

Folklore says that the Chinese were the first to use wheat gluten as a meat substitute, possibly for Buddhist vegetarians. Generations of
cultural experience mean that everything at Dao Palate, an all-vegan Chinese restaurant in Park Slope, Brooklyn, is delicious. The menu is
Pan-Asian, predominantly Chinese with some Japanese and Thai items available. Wheat gluten and tofu are amazingly versatile substances, and Dao Palate has turned soy into an art form: they make dishes in every flavor imaginable, with meat substitutes ranging from soft to crispy and everywhere in-between. The owner of Dao Palate orders as many vegetables as possible from a local Farmer’s Market. Everything on the menu, except for the ice cream on the dessert menu and milk served with coffee is vegan – but these are clearly marked non-vegan. Soy milk and soy ice cream are also available.

3) Best Mostly-Vegan Cafe: Maimonide of Brooklyn
525 Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11217
(718) 797-2555

A chic cafe with an indie / hipster vibe and communal tables, Maimonide of Brooklyn has exquisite and unique pairings of vegetables. The food doesn’t go heavy on the soy, so it’s a great place to take friends who are reluctant to try tofu – and the brilliantly varied menu is an
excellent reminder of what you can do with vegetables and bread. Try the Mobs, open-faced sandwiches shaped like the arches of the Brooklyn Bridge (they can also be made gluten-free). The Anti Oxidant Mob, a dessert of bananas, chocolate and mint served on graham cracker bread, will satisfy your sweet tooth. Located two blocks from the Atlantic Mall, Maimonide is stuffed with Brooklyn kitsch and cute decorations. The cafe itself is very Brooklyn; after all, who would expect a high-end vegan cafe in the middle of un-gentrified Atlantic Avenue? This cafe is worth treating yourself to.

*Note: a few items on the menu contain honey, and are noted as such on the menu. Ask your waiter and they can make substitutions.

4) Best Hidden Vegan Food: Cafe Tibet
1510 Cortelyou Road Brooklyn, NY 11226
(718) 941-2725

You can walk right by Cafe Tibet without noticing it – literally. The restaurant is hidden half out of sight behind the Cortelyou Road train
station. Located on up-and-coming Cortelyou Road in the middle of Victorian Flatbush, it has a rather unassuming facade. Not everything on the menu is vegetarian, but many great vegan options lay within its walls. If you’ve never tasted Tibetan food, this restaurant is worth
checking out. Items worth trying include their tingmo (steamed buns) with hot sauce, phing-tsel (vegetarian phing-sha) which is a glass
noodle and potato dish with Tibetan flavorings, and tsel-baklap, vegetable patties served with Tibetan salad. Vegan options are marked with a (V) on their menu.

5) Best Vegan Meal Under $10: Four Seasons
2281 Church Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11226
(718) 693-7996

The ambiance at Four Seasons is a little bit grungy, but at $6 for a huge amount of Caribbean-style food, you can’t really go wrong. Their
steam table, with a different daily assortment of seitan, tofu, textured veggie protein, noodles, rice and beans, is perfect for take-out. The seasonings tend a bit on the spicy side, so if you prefer food to be bland, stay away; but for venturesome palates, Four Seasons lets you explore Caribbean food with the certainty that everything you order will be vegan. There’s also a smoothie and juice bar with healthy options, and the workers are friendly and happy to answer any and all questions about the food.
