Subject: cravings!

hi everyone! i'm 13, i've been vegetarian for about 2 years and vegan for the last 6 months. Lately (past few weeks) the food i'm eating is getting ridiculous. i usually just eat what i feel like, if i have an urge for an orange i assume i'm low on calcium, eat one or two, and feel better, stuff like that. but recently i've been into seeds and nuts, at first it seemed normal, but after eating a lot of different legumes i still had a mad craving. BUT i also have a history of mood disorders and have been extremely depressed for a while, and i cant figure out if this protein fetish thing is related to that or if i'm actually needing MORE protein or oils or something, any suggestions of what i should do would be great... all ive eaten for the past 36 hours is peanuts...

Subject: Can't eat bread - HELP!!!!

I have been an off again/on again vegan for a few years - usually because I can't get enough protein and have had medical problems. I am finally at a stable point where I can be assured of buying and eating the protein I need, and am going back to the vegan lifestyle. My problem is that I can't eat bread products anymore - something in the dough or the process of making it is causing me to have horrible heartburn and indigestion - and medicine hasn't helped it. I have been bread-free for a week, but looking at many of the sample menus on this website, I can see that grains are an important part of the vegan food pyramid. Any suggestions? I am sure that there is some type of bread I can eat - but I'm a little nervous about the procedure. Any one have any ideas? thanks!

Subject: Veganism saved my life

I became a vegan seven years ago. I had a major health problem with no insurance and little trust in western medications. I turned to my locale health store. I did a self diagnosis and have God given talent for this. I had a bad kidney infection and over load of toxin from all the crape I ate for over thirty years. I have now become more healthy at age forty then when I was twenty. I have complete blood flow to my fingers and do not have cold hands from cold weather and feel like I will live to 104 years old now. Change for your person health not for any other reason it is you that matters. It will bring good karma to you and to all of Gods creatures. Doctor Jason The viking Halvorsen P.S. Both my daughters are Veggies, so for Thanksgiving, along with the usual tofurky, I make gravy out of cream of broccoli or celery soup by adding a touch of poultry seasoning and some Gravy Master to darken it slightly. I have been doing this for years and it is great over the stuffing and potatoes as well. We all enjoy it as it is a less fatty substitute for meat gravy.

Subject: Breakfast Question 4 Shay

Hi, Shay, congratulations, first of all, for making the giant step to going vegetarian.

I also decided to go 'cold turkey' on taking meat out of my diet over 3 years ago. I would go to your local health store (fred meyer if you have one, they have a great health section) and check out your choices. There are several flavors for soy milk, soy/veggie cheese, tofu pups, 'deli slices' from yves...have some fun w/ it! If you feel that strongly for the animals, or whatever your personal reason would be for going Vegan, I would still wait about a month to get used to the vegetarian way of life. As to whether you are going to continue eating eggs or not is up to you.

OVO VEGETARIAN-eats eggs LACTO VEGETARIAN-consumes dairy products OVO-LACTO VEGETARIAN-eats both eggs and dairy PESCO VEGETARIAN-eats fish VEGAN-avoids all animal-derived food products

Check out some sites on vegetarianism and ask yourself why it is that you are going Vegetarian. Health? Animals? The planet? Religion? Write down your reasons and take it from there. Good luck and feel free to write again. :)

ps-for breakfast, try a fruit shake w/ soy milk, oatmeal, ceral w/ soy milk, toast and jam,a healthy sandwich, or the new 'veggie burger' at burger king! :)

Subject: Quorn Wars

I found this article to be very interesting. THe good news for us veggies is that apparently we are a big market worth fighting over, so hopefully, we'll have plenty of new, tasty alternatives.... -RB

Forbes Magazine Food Fight Thursday October 24, 6:39 pm ET

Why is a popular--and healthy--meat substitute under such relentless attack? Tony Soprano has nothing on the Center For Science In The Public Interest. Fresh from deep-sixing Olestra, Procter & Gamble's noncaloric fat substitute, it's now trying to whack a popular and healthy meat substitute called Quorn , from U.K.-based Marlow Foods Ltd. , a unit of AstraZeneca . Made from a fungus called "mycoprotein," it's used in 90 imitation beef and chicken products and is Europe's top-selling meat alternative.

ADVERTISEMENT No matter that Quorn received approval from the Food & Drug Administration early this year, after a rigorous five-year process. "This product was cavalierly waved through by the FDA with an alarming lack of curiosity," says the center's executive director, Michael Jacobson, "considering that the FDA knew a study showed that this product would make some people violently sick." It petitioned not only the FDA but also European health agencies to yank all Quorn products.

The British Food Standards Agency rejected the center's petition, noting that confirmed reactions seemed to occur about once per 146,000 mycoprotein customers--a figure, admittedly, supplied by Marlow (NYSE:AZN - News) . But the agency also noted that allergic reactions occur about once in 300 times for soybeans, the prime ingredient in many meat substitutes.

Jacobson wrote in his newsletter that "the only human study of Quorn" Marlow submitted to the FDA "shows nearly 10% of the people who ate Quorn [felt] nauseated"; this was picked up by the Associated Press. Yet, at about the same time, the center sent the FDA a letter noting the agency had evaluated four human studies back in 1999. Jacobson now insists the study he chose "was the only one I knew of at the time." Did he interpret it correctly? The study showed virtually the same symptoms among mycoprotein eaters and a placebo group; its one confirmed reaction in 200 subjects, say the study's authors, probably wasn't related to the food.

Mycoprotein actually seems to reduce LDL ("bad") cholesterol, raise HDL ("good") cholesterol and lower postmeal appetites, according to Sanford Miller, former FDA director of the Center for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition.

So what's the CSPI's real beef? Perhaps it can be found in its assertion to the FDA that "considering the plethora of tasty, nutritious meat alternatives on supermarket shelves, there is absolutely no need for [Quorn]." The center has long been a booster of Gardenburger, the moneylosing, substitute-meat maker. The company has returned the favor. In the acknowledgments to his vegan cookbook, Garden Cuisine, Paul Wenner, Gardenburger's chief creative officer, names Mahatma Gandhi, Jacques Cousteau, Rachel Carson--and Michael Jacobson. As its stock began a 74% dive in April, Gardenburger e-mailed food brokers a copy of CSPI's letter to the FDA documenting alleged reactions to Quorn--before the FDA could respond--and speculated that "Quorn's days are numbered." Gardenburger is not getting favorable treatment, the center says.

Still, saving Gardenburger's bacon would be a coup for the center. But neither science nor the public interest would be served.

Subject: Herpes and Vegetarianism- A VERY BAD COMBINATION!!!!

Hi everyone I am new to this site and I hope someone can help me with this problem that I have. You see I was just diagnosed with Herpes a few months ago and every herpes web site I go to says to eat foods high in Lysine and low in arginine, both amino acids. I take Lysine supplements but you would not believe what foods are high in lysine (discourages outbreaks)(meats, cheese, milk, fish) and high in arginine (encourages outbreaks): NUTS, SESAME SEEDS, OATMEAL, WHOLE WHEAT, COCONUT,BRAN, GRITS, FRUIT AND MANY VEGETABLES!!! Well now what should I do? Starve to death? It seems that most every thing I survive on like nuts milks, and grains, AND WELL MOST EVERYTHING A VEGAN SURVIVES ON, is taboo when you are trying to avoid an outbreak or minimize the healing time when you do breakout.!!! Even if I went back to dairy products then what do I survive on fattening cheeses an ice cream? I don't want to comprimise my beliefs but I am slowly drindling away. Any suggestions, advice, would be greatly appreciated. heres hoping for some hope. LaLa

Subject: KOMBU SEAWEED NOODLE

I just tried a delicious new product called the Kombu seaweed noodle. It is 100% seaweed sligthly cooked, shaped into a noodle and packed in natural seawater. It is all natural with no additives so it is 100% vegetarian with all the health benefits of seaweed (high in calcium and iodine, no gluten, no cholestorol, no fat, flour or eggs and low calorie). You can just rinse and eat hot or cold with any spice, sauce or other ingredients you wish to add. The taste is very mild and takes on the flavor of whatever you put on it. I love it hot with tomato sauce. I found it at the Gourmet Garage in New York City, but you can email kombunooldle@aol.com for other places or check out their website www.kombunoodle.com

I have to do a classifiction/division essay in my composition class. I am going to describe the differences amoung the types of vegetarians. I'm only on the prewriting part of the project, and I'm having a little trouble. I already know that I can do the paragraph on veganism by describing that they don't eat animal product, why they don't eat them and the substitutes they have for them. The problem I am having is writing enough info for a paragragh for each of the other types of vegetarianism. If you can give me info that will help me, it will be much appreciated. I need this information before I go to school tomorrow.
