3) VRG OUTREACH TO FAMILIES OF LIVING CLASSROOMS FOUNDATION STUDENTS
   By Hillary Blunt, VRG Intern

Musical hits of today and yesterday filled the gymnasium of the
Carmel Anthony Youth Development Center in Baltimore City on Saturday,
June 9th at the CARE Community Health and Wellness Fair. I had the
chance to represent The Vegetarian Resource Group and promote
vegetarian diets with VRG volunteer Dorothy Kenney alongside
several health education tables ranging from breast cancer awareness
to health insurance to vegetarian diets.

We enjoyed handing out coloring books to shy children adorned
in tutus and brightly colored knee-socks. They came out of their
shells when given the opportunity to perform a lively belly dancing
routine. While talking to parents about vegetarianism and
incorporating vegetables into childrens diets, we were pleased to
hear that many did, in fact, eat vegetarian as much as they could.

One mother expressed to us that she has trouble getting her
daughter to eat any sort of fruits or vegetables. Without delay,
Dorothy offered a potential solution: smoothies! Dorothy asked,
Does your daughter like juice?" knowing if the bright fruits and
vegetables are blended together in a yummy smoothie they would be
more appealing to a young child.

We also handed out a large number of materials to a teacher from
Living Classrooms. He had been vegetarian for ten years, and made
the transition to eating vegan three months ago. For as long as he
has been working with Living Classrooms, he has been aswering
questions on vegetarian diets for students so he took pamphlets to
distribute to his class to use as tools for educating about
what it means to be vegetarian and why some people choose to live
that lifestyle.

5) VRG OUTREACH BOOTH AT SPORTS CARDIOVASCULAR AND WELLNESS NUTRITION
   CONFERENCE IN BALTIMORE

This past spring The VRG had an outreach booth at the annual meeting
of the Sports Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition (SCAN) diatetic
practice group of the American Dietetic Association/Academy of
Nutrition and Dietetics. We shared vegan information with sports
dietitians who are now equiped with brochures, handouts, and endless
articles from our website to use when counseling athlete clients.
There were several significant conversations about vegetarian
nutritional needs and even exchanges with dietitians who work for
major companies that are developing vegetarian and vegan products.
Thank you for volunteering to Amanda Gilley, Dorothy Kenney, Amanda
Matte, and Jenny Saccenti, as well as Debra Wasserman and Charles
Stahler.

by Rebecca Kaplan, VRG Intern

The Vegetarian Resource Group has a new way for you to spread your
beliefs, using your chest as a message board! The VRG recently opened a
shop on Zazzle, an internet store that lets users print custom designs
onto T-shirts and other merchandise.

At VRG's online store, [ http://www.zazzle.com/gifts?ch=vegresgroup ],
you can currently purchase three different T-shirt designs, including
one that reads "Vegetarians Have Good Hearts", and one with the VRG's
logo. You can also buy buttons, magnets, and mugs with logos designed
by VRG. They make a great gift for a budding vegetarian!

The best part about Zazzle is that each item is custom printed, so if
you click on the item in the store, you can choose the type of T-shirt,
button, magnet or mug it is printed on, including 51 styles of T-shirts.

by 10 UMD Dietetic Interns on May 14th for an information session on
vegetarian and vegan diets that would better enable them to counsel veg
clients in the future. One of the soon to be RD's reflected on the
discussion on reading food labels and deciphering ingredients,
specifically the ingredient l-cysteine. To read her write up, visit:

10) BEYOND MEAT: VEGGIE STRIPS FROM A CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND COMPANY
By Jeanne Yacoubou, MS, VRG Research Directer

Beyond Meat, from Savage River, Inc., a new meat analog company
founded by Ethan Brown and based in Cumberland, Maryland, began out
of concern for farm animals. Spending weekends as a child on his
family's farm, Ethan Brown grew increasingly concerned about the
plight of animals raised for food. He eventually became vegan.
Unsatisfied with meat analogs on the market, he decided to start a
company that offered something "more realistic, tastier and cheaper."

Made from soy, pea protein, amaranth, and carrot fiber with a few
other vegan ingredients, Beyond Meat Veggie Chicken Strips,
will appeal to vegans and vegetarians as well as mainstream
consumers looking to incorporate meatless meals into their diets
while maintaining the taste and texture of meat," according to
Brown.

In Fall 2012, the product will be available to consumers as a retail
item at Whole Foods Markets in Northern California. Further
expansion to other Whole Foods Markets, mainstream supermarkets,
convenience stores, and similar establishments, is planned.
