3) MARYLAND RESTAURANT REVIEW: HARMONY BAKERY

by Julia Mathew

Harmony Bakery is a vegetarian and gluten-free bakery and café located in Hampden in Baltimore, Maryland. All of their desserts are vegan and gluten-free. They also offer coffee, golden milk (sweet turmeric drink), kombucha, and many lunch items, all of which are gluten-free, vegetarian, and often vegan.

Harmony Bakery serves some vegan lunch items such as spinach quiche with cashew cheese, tarts, pizza, kale salad, gazpacho soup, quinoa burgers, avocado melts, chia pudding, and raw zucchini salad. The lunch items offered, as well as the desserts, are seasonal and vary on a daily basis.

In terms of desserts, the bakery offers a variety of cookies, pastries, and donuts such as thin mint cookies, double chocolate cookie sandwiches, cinnamon sugar donuts, chocolate glaze donuts, nut & date bars, and raw balls.

I got a vegan and gluten-free vanilla donut with matcha (green tea) flavored icing and a toasted everything bagel with dairy-free cream cheese. I was so satisfied by the quality of the donut and bagel. The consistency of the donut was quite dense and perfectly sweet. The matcha flavor of the icing was not overwhelming and complimented the vanilla cake well. The bagel was chewy and perfectly toasted with the smooth cream cheese on top. I also really enjoyed the intimate atmosphere of the bakery. In terms of indoor seating, there are a few tables in the bakery and some bar-like seating by the store’s front windows. The staff was very kind, down to earth, and knowledgeable about the products being served. Overall, my experience with Harmony Bakery has been very pleasant and enjoyable and I will certainly return again in the near future!

MUSICAL MEATLESS MONDAY

First Musical Meatless Monday in May launches on Monday, May 1 in Baltimore.

Baltimore, MD., April 30, 2017 -- On Monday, May 1st, the Black Vegetarian Society of Maryland and A Well-Fed World present the first-ever "Musical Meatless Monday" at Northwestern High School, 6900 Park Heights Avenue in Baltimore. In partnership with the Meatless Monday organization. Meatless Monday is a global movement with a simple message: once a week, cut the meat.

Baltimore City and surrounding communities are invited to attend an evening of live entertainment while enjoying a meatless meal and listening to some lectures at the Musical Meatless Monday event. Doors open at 5:30 pm. The program will begin at 6 pm and end at 7:30 pm. The menu will consist of all plant-based foods and desserts provided by local, Baltimore-based businesses, chefs and urban farmers to include mock-meats, fruits, vegetables, grains, beverages, and a sample table featuring popular store bought items.

The mission of the evening is to expose people to the global Meatless Monday movement in a relaxed and entertaining environment where they can indulge in a meatless meal that not only will help to improve their health but will also renew their minds into a way of thinking about the planet and the animals.

"Our goal is for people to connect with their inner compassion, their soul, when eating and to understand the important decisions they are making when choosing the foods they eat", said Wright-Brown, Executive Director of BVSMD and host of the evening.

The principal of Northwestern, Saeed Hill, said, “I was exposed to this food late in life. I want my students to learn this early."

The program includes speakers from the board of the newly formed non-profit organization and organizers of the event, Black Vegetarian Society of Maryland, along with guest speakers from the Meatless Monday Organization, City Weeds, and the Humane Society of the United States. DJ 5Starr and students of Northwestern High School will provide live entertainment. Featured performance by local artist and soulful songstress, Mova Kween. Special invited guest DJ Cavem

This event is a fundraiser for the Black Vegetarian Society of Maryland. There is a $5 donation request per person. Proceeds will go towards funding the event and future Musical Meatless Monday events. Donations are tax deductible.
