Pizzeria/bar/eclectic. Mellow Mushroom is a pizzeria chain known for its cool vibe, tasty eats, and craft beer. They offer a large variety of vegetarian options, many of which can be made vegan. They serve appetizers, salads, calzones, hoagies, pizza, and micro brews. Their crust and red sauce are both vegan and they offer Daiya vegan cheese as well. Vegan pizza toppings and sandwich fillings include tofu, tempeh, and fresh veggies like avocado. Their Mega-Veggie pizza is very popular. Mellow Mushroom cares about its sustainability; their napkins, paper towels, tissues, and pizza boxes are made from 100% recycled material. Enjoy dining on their outdoor patio.

Tea Room. The English Tea Room offers the elegance and charm of England in historic downtown Covington. Their menu of organic salads and sandwiches includes vegan items. Indian. Between the airport and New Orleans' city limits, Taj Mahal offers several vegetarian dishes that are prepared in oil, not butter. Try curry, dahl, fresh breads, and other items. The owner says that half the orders they serve are vegetarian.

African. Bennachin Restaurant offers 'A Taste of Africa.' While this is clearly not a vegetarian restaurant, they have several vegetable dishes and other meals that can be served without meat (these are noted on the menu). They offer daily lunch specials that are a terrific value. Cash only.

Bakery/café/organic. Breads on Oak is a bakery and café. Breads are baked fresh daily and made with organic flour. Quite a few of their breads are vegan including baguettes, multigrain, ciabatta, and whole wheat. Vegan items are noted on the menu. They offer vegan sandwiches, soups, and pastries. Strawberry Vanilla Muffins and Double Chocolate Pecan Brownies are examples of some of their vegan sweets. The atmosphere is very cozy and warm at Breads on Oak.

Latin American. Carmo, a tropical café, is a wonderful place for a refreshing meal. They use local, organic produce as well as exotic fruits in making their dishes. The Caju and Graviola juices are very popular. The Carmo salad with vegan ham and mango is a crowd favorite. There are quite a few vegan options on the menu including the Black Bean Fritter Dish and the Broken Noodle Salad. The Esmeralda salad with quinoa, beans, and pumpkin seeds is another very popular item. Outdoor seating is available. Carmo is located between Camp and Magazine. Natural foods store. Mardi Gras Zone is a hipster natural foods store with hot food bar and grab-n-go items. With the exception of Yom Kippur, they are open every day 24/7. The Zone is located not far down the river from the French Quarter across Elysian Fields Avenue; look for the sign that says "Market."

Middle Eastern. Mona's Café is a combination general store and restaurant. They offer many vegetarian and vegan options. Try the Vegetarian Plate. Mona's on Magazine Street is located downtown on the outskirts of the French Quarter.

Natural foods store. The New Orleans Food Co-op offers organic and natural foods and products at affordable prices. They have a small soup and salad bar as well as fresh produce and bulk foods. Many vegan grab-n-go items are available. Everyone is welcome to shop at the Co-op; you don't have to be a member. They are located in the New Orleans Healing Center, on the corner of St. Claude and St. Roch.

Japanese/sushi. Ninja is a Japanese restaurant and sushi bar with an entirely separate vegetarian menu! Their food presentations are impressive. Try the Enoki Mushroom Sushi, Avocado Roll, Tofu Steak, or Cold Soba Noodles. Save room for dessert and try the vegan Coconut Sorbet. Ninja is located uptown, a couple blocks off the streetcar line, and not far from colleges like Tulane, Loyola, and Xavier. They try to source their produce as locally as possible. People really love their freshly-made juices, fair-trade coffee, and lattes. The vibe is laidback and hip at Satsuma. The café offers a wide selection of vegan comfort foods, traditional New Orleans fare, and some raw selections. Enjoy gumbo, fried tofu nuggets, peach and kale salad, raw chili, the Po-Boy sandwich, Toasted Coconut wrap, enchiladas, or a BBQ sandwich made with their own homemade seitan.
