He needed an outside source for a research project\nand turned to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He asked: Why is dairy-free better\nfor the environment?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is our response:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many ways to approach the\nquestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a water usage perspective, it\ntakes more water <strong>per calorie<\/strong> and<strong> per gram of protein <\/strong>to produce\ndairy milk compared to <strong>some<\/strong> types of crops used in dairy-free milk <strong>but\nnot all<\/strong>. In the table below, use &#8220;oil crops&#8221; for soymilk;\n&#8220;cereals&#8221; for oatmilk; and &#8220;nuts&#8221; for nutmilks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vrg.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Screenshot_a.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14689\" width=\"300\" height=\"334\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the reference:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/waterfootprint.org\/en\/water-footprint\/product-water-footprint\/water-footprint-crop-and-animal-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/waterfootprint.org\/en\/water-footprint\/product-water-footprint\/water-footprint-crop-and-animal-products\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interestingly, dairy <strong>butter<\/strong>\nhas a <strong>lower<\/strong> water footprint (for some parameters) than other sources of <strong>fat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is an article that&#8217;s easier to\n&#8220;digest&#8221; than the previous one:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/waterfootprint.org\/media\/downloads\/Hoekstra-2012-Water-Meat-Dairy_2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/waterfootprint.org\/media\/downloads\/Hoekstra-2012-Water-Meat-Dairy_2.pdf<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s one that looks at soymilk v.\ncow&#8217;s milk:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.utwente.nl\/en\/publications\/the-water-footprint-of-soy-milk-and-soy-burger-and-equivalent-ani\">https:\/\/research.utwente.nl\/en\/publications\/the-water-footprint-of-soy-milk-and-soy-burger-and-equivalent-ani<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also consider the carbon\nfootprint (greenhouse gas emissions) of foods. Here&#8217;s a great resource:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/static.ewg.org\/reports\/2011\/meateaters\/pdf\/methodology_ewg_meat_eaters_guide_to_health_and_climate_2011.pdf\">http:\/\/static.ewg.org\/reports\/2011\/meateaters\/pdf\/methodology_ewg_meat_eaters_guide_to_health_and_climate_2011.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;In terms of carbon emissions,\nrice and nutmilks are worse than soy and cow&#8217;s milk as you see summarized here:&nbsp;\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.greeneatz.com\/foods-carbon-footprint.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/www.greeneatz.com\/foods-carbon-footprint.html<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rice is particularly bad because\nof methane production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, other researchers have come\nto different conclusions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vrg.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/image-b-1024x720.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14690\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This source sheds more light on the\nlife cycle assessment for soy v. dairy milk. Look especially at Table 3 on p.\n18. According to this reference, soy is better for the environment than dairy\nmilk.
