The final text\nof the California law states &#8220;(c) For the purposes of this section,\n\u201cplant-based meals\u201d shall mean entire meals that contain no animal products or\nbyproducts, including meat, poultry, fish, dairy, or eggs.&#8221; The New York\nlaw states &#8220;plant-based food option&#8221; means a food or beverage that is\nfree of animal products and that has nutritional value comparable to the\nnon-plant-based food option that it replaces. These laws appear to be using\n\u201cplant-based\u201d to mean \u201cvegan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The non-profit nutrition organization Oldways has made it\nsimpler for hospitals to serve vegan meals. Oldways has created the <em>Plant Forward Plates Healthcare Toolkit<\/em>\nthat features more than 40 recipes scaled up to 100 servings, therapeutic meal\nplans, nutritional analyses, and food-ordering guides. After reviewing the\nmenus and recipes, all of which are vegan, The Vegetarian Resource Group has\nendorsed this useful tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Plant Forward Plates Toolkit fee is being waived to\nencourage hospitals to make 2020 the year they add healthy and delicious\nplant-based meals to their menus.
