He asked: \u201c&#8230;In preparing for a PhD next\nyear, I&#8217;m working on research around the economic impacts of plant-based diets,\n<em>e.g.<\/em>, consumption, production, externalities, trends, etc. Would you\nhave any suggestions for papers or people in this area? Insight greatly\nappreciated!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The VRG responds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been a significant\nincrease in the popularity of plant-based diets during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.\nMany consumers are trending <a href=\"https:\/\/modernrestaurantmanagement.com\/covid-19-is-the-opportunity-plant-based-alternatives-have-waited-for\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">away from meat<\/a>, partly due to a perceived shortage of\nanimal-based foods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>General Information on\nPlant-Based Economics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are recent articles on\nthis phenomenon from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-05-01\/fake-meat-startups-rake-in-cash-amid-coronavirus-food-worries\">Bloomberg<\/a>\nand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/future-perfect\/2020\/5\/5\/21247286\/plant-based-meat-coronavirus-pandemic-impossible-burger-beyond\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vox<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also for background, the\nWorld Economic Forum (WEF) published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2018\/12\/vegetarianism-is-good-for-the-economy-too\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2018 article<\/a> that contains several links to important\nstudies on plant-based economics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The WEF also explores the\ncategory it calls <a href=\"https:\/\/intelligence.weforum.org\/topics\/a1Gb00000015MIVEA2?tab=publications\">Agriculture,\nFood, and Beverage Industries<\/a> with extensive listings of resources and\narticles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vegan Business Resource<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a business-focused look,\n<a href=\"https:\/\/vegconomist.com\/category\/agriculture\/\">Vegconomist<\/a> is a\ngood place to start. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Historical Reference on\nPlant-Based Economics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The academic journal titled <em>Ecological\nEconomics<\/em> is a good source. You will find many research articles dealing\nwith the types of issues in plant-based economics that you&#8217;re analyzing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0921800902002616\">a\nscholarly paper<\/a> by Carlsson-Kanyama, <em>et al.<\/em>, titled \u201cFood and life\ncycle energy inputs: consequences of diet and ways to increase efficiency\u201d that\nprovides historical perspective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recent Economics Research\non Plant-Based Diets<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/pnas\/early\/2016\/03\/16\/1523119113.full.pdf\">2016\narticle<\/a> written by M.
