I discuss ideas expressed in Maine\u2019s first\npro-vegetarian publication, the <em>Pleasure\nBoat<\/em>, an alternative weekly newspaper which began publication in 1845 and\ncontinued until 1862.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Pleasure Boat<\/em> was published by radical\nreformer and missionary Jeremiah Hacker, who advocated&nbsp;in favor of many\nreform efforts including abolition, women\u2019s rights and temperance \u2014 all closely\ntied to the era\u2019s vegetarian movement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the July\n20, 1854 edition, for example, Hacker linked meat consumption to the oppression\nof women, writing: \u201cJust look at the slavery that perverted appetite imposes on\nwomen! Three times a day, in hot weather, they must fire up the cookstove to\nroast, boil or fry flesh, and prepare hot tea or coffee, to fire the blood!
