A mob of \u201calmost crazy\u201d men attacked\nthe church where he was speaking. \u201cBrickbars were hurled through the windows,\nshouts went up outside and the woman shrieked inside the church,\u201d according to\na 19th century newspaper report.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This revealing event appears in\nno Maine history books, yet scholars in other fields have explored its causes\nand implications.
