{"id":21721,"date":"2023-08-25T10:00:41","date_gmt":"2023-08-25T14:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vrg.org\/blog\/?p=21721"},"modified":"2023-08-10T10:13:01","modified_gmt":"2023-08-10T14:13:01","slug":"bill-introduced-that-promotes-plant-based-food-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vrg.org\/blog\/2023\/08\/25\/bill-introduced-that-promotes-plant-based-food-production\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Introduced That Promotes Plant-based Food Production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vrg.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/mcgovern_plant_act.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21722\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vrg.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/mcgovern_plant_act.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By Reed Mangels, PhD, RD<\/p>\n<p>Representative Jim McGovern (D-MA) has introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/118th-congress\/house-bill\/5023?s=1&amp;r=2&amp;q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22%22%5D%7D\">H.R. 5023<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgovern.house.gov\/uploadedfiles\/mcgovern_plant_act.pdf\">Peas, Legumes, and Nuts Today Act or PLANT Act<\/a>. \u00a0According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/mcgovern.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=400022\">press release<\/a> from Representative McGovern, \u201cthis act establishes\u00a0new opportunities for farmers and food companies, creates\u00a0new jobs in farming communities, advances\u00a0USDA\u2019s efforts to connect American farmers to new markets at home and abroad, and expands\u00a0consumer choices at the grocery store, through plant-based food research and production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill includes a plan to develop a plant-based protein input research program which would allow research grants to improve the nutritional value and flavor of soybeans, wheat, mushrooms, oats, almonds, and other crops. \u00a0It also calls for the Secretary of Agriculture to establish an Office of Plant-Based Foods and Innovative Production as a department within USDA.
