The Soy Gourmet

Soyfoods books are certainly sprouting up all over these days. The Soy Gourmet offers 75 recipes using soyfoods including tofu, tempeh, textured soy protein, soymilk, miso, soy nuts, etc. Many of the recipes are quite common and simple to prepare. Others are more creative and may involve a bit more preparation time. Sample recipes include Peanut Butter Pie, No-Meat Loaf, and Soy-Sausage Breakfast Casserole.

The Soy Gourmet (ISBN 0-452-20112-4) is published by A Plume Book and retails for $11.95. The book is 191 pages long and can be found in bookstores. Reviewed by Debra Wasserman.



Calciyum!

Calciyum! is a terrific new vegan cookbook offering recipes that are high in calcium. There are many color photos depicting the delicious recipes, including Creative Kale Dip, Wild Rice and Quinoa Salad, Hearty Soybean Burgers, and Peanut Butter Marble "Cheesecake." Other dishes include Chickpea Lemon Soup, Maple Poppyseed Dressing, Shepherd's Pie, Greens with Sundried Tomatoes, Candied Almonds, Butterscotch Pudding, and more.

Calciyum! is a great book for anyone trying to add non-dairy sources of calcium to their diet or simply looking for some new creative recipes.

Flavors of Korea

Flavors of Korea is a vegetarian cookbook that contains many vegan-friendly recipes. You'll find Bean Sprout Soup, Cabbage Pickle, Sesame Spinach, Sweet Potato Stir-fry, Seaweed Rice Rolls, and many other Korean dishes. A list of menu suggestions is also offered.

The Children's Kitchen Garden

The Children's Kitchen Garden makes a terrific holiday gift. The book includes vegetarian recipes, many of which are or can be made vegan-friendly. Children will learn how to eat a wider variety of foods if they're involved in the growing process. This book encourages readers to eat seasonally and offers numerous gardening tips. You will also find helpful ideas for growing herbs.

Healing Centers & Retreats

If you want to spend your next vacation at a healing center or retreat, this book is for you. You will find information on 230 locations including wellness centers, spas, health resorts, inns, and much more. Listings are by state or Canadian province. The book is also indexed by therapy type offered such as Chinese medicine or massage. Each entry includes a description of the place, hours and days of operation, accommodations, rates, whether credit cards are accepted, meal plans, services, facilities, staff, special notes, nearby attractions, and information on how to get there. Healing Centers & Retreats (ISBN 1-56261-404-5) is published by John Muir Publications in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The book is 232 pages long and retails for $16.95. Reviewed by Debra Wasserman.
