Calcium in the Vegan Diet

While you may not hear it as often as the ubiquitous protein question, nevertheless, calcium and dairy products are inextricably linked in the minds of most people. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of calcium rich foods that don’t come from a cow. VRG’s newly-updated article Calcium in the Vegan Diet contains a list of vegan sources of calcium, as well as sample menus that provide more than the recommended 1,000 mg per day.

  1. Finally a guide which does NOT list spinach as a good source of calcium! Many vegetable sources of calcium don’t have as high of a bioavailability as dairy. I’ve ranted on this before at http://vegetariansupplementsguide.com/a-vegetarian-and-vegans-guide-to-calcium.

    I think that a lot of vegans purposely misconstrue the facts to make the vegan diet seem easier. They aren’t helping the cause by doing this!

    It is not easy to NATURALLY get your calcium RDA as a vegan. Heck, most of the “calcium-rich” foods you list are only rich in calcium because they are fortified!
