Does Drinking Tea Interfere with Iron Absorption?

Posted on September 04, 2018 by The VRG Blog Editor

Vegetarian Resource Group Nutrition Advisor Reed Mangels, PhD, RD answer the following question in the latest Vegetarian Journal Nutrition Hotline column: “I drink several cups of black tea every day. Recently, I found out that I’m anemic, and my doctor told me to stop drinking tea because it could be interfering with iron absorption. Do I really need to give up my tea?”

I’ve been a vegetarian for 35 years and a vegan for 9. I drink green tea 3-4 times/day, but rarely with meals. I donate blood regularly. My most recent hemoglobin was 16.1 (normal is 12-14 for women, 14-16 for men). I am a 64 year old female. I really dont’t think you need to give up tea. Try increasing your intake of beans and greens, having something with Vitamin C at the same time, like tomatoes or citrus.
