Notes on searching the VRG web site

Use the word match option if you want to match an entire word, e.g. the search pattern "iron" would match the search pattern "environment" if word match is not checked, but it would not match if word match is checked.

After your search is completed you will be presented with a page containing the results. The results contain a table of hyperlinks that you can use to reach the documents. When you link into the files, you can use your browser's Find command to find the matches within the file.

If you want to get very fancy with your search patterns, you can use wild card characters or boolean operations. Do not use word match if you use wild cards. The search uses Glimpse (GLobal IMPlicit SEarch). Glimpse supports a large variety of search patterns, including strings, boolean patterns, and wild cards.

Strings
Strings are any sequence of characters, including the special symbols '^' for beginning of line and '$' for end of line. The following special characters ( '$', '^', '*', '[', '^', '|', '(', ')', '!', and '\' ) as well as the following meta characters are special to glimpse. ';', ',', '#', '<', '>', '-', and '.', should be preceded by '\' if they are to be matched as regular characters. For example, \^abc\ corresponds to the string ^abc\, whereas ^abc corresponds to the string abc at the beginning of a line.

Boolean operations
Glimpse supports an 'AND' operation denoted by the symbol ';' an 'OR' operation denoted by the symbol ',', or any combination. For example, a search pattern of 'vegetable;pizza' will output links to all pages containing both 'vegetable' and 'pizza' on the same page. A search pattern of 'vegetable, pizza' will output links to all pages containing either 'vegetable' or 'pizza'.

Wild cards
The symbol '#' is used to denote a sequence of any number (including 0) of arbitrary characters. So a search pattern of veg#an will match both 'vegan' and 'vegetarian'.
