Veggie Bits

Yves Veggie Cuisine
Yves Veggie Cuisine has introduced three new additions to its product line. Two new entrées — Veggie Penne and Veggie Macaroni — are now available. The penne features a roasted red pepper and garlic sauce, and the macaroni is complemented by a tomato and fine herbs sauce. These two Italian entrées are made with Veggie Ground Round, a soy-based ground beef substitute.

The third addition is Veggie Ham Slices. The slices are fat-free, and contain no preservatives or nitrites. Made from soy and a combination of natural spices, the Ham Slices are the latest addition to Yves' deli line, which also features Veggie Turkey Slices, Veggie Deli Slices, Veggie Pepperoni Slices, Veggie Pizza Pepperoni, and Canadian Veggie Bacon.

Faux Fish Served in Norfolk
PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) staffers frequently descend on Ships Cabin, an elegant seafood restaurant on the Chesapeake Bay where the fishing industry is an economic staple for many natives. But the Norfolk, VA-based animal rights activists, known for making waves with their national Anti-Fishing Campaign, go to the restaurant to dine — not to protest — as it may be the first seafood house in the country to feature faux fish dishes on its menu.

Diners at Ships Cabin can choose from two faux fish meals that top the list of entrées: Faux Scallops served over seasoned rice and Crabless Crab Cakes served with sweet potato mashers.

Joe Hoggard owns the restaurant that was started by his father. Last winter, he heard PETA's Lisa Lange on a local radio program describing how fish suffer when they are caught and how they begin to suffocate the moment they are pulled out of the water. Hoggard called Lange the next day and asked about vegetarian alternatives to fish dishes.

VRG wishes to congratulate both PETA and Ships Cabin for making a positive contribution toward animals and cuisine.
