3) THE VEGETARIAN RESOURCE GROUP'S 2018 VIDEO CONTEST WINNERS

NeCole Hilton was a Vegetarian Resource Group 2018 video contest winner.

Intro to Veganism
By NeCole Hilton

No cheeseburger, leather car interior, or milkshake is worth the immense suffering we systematically inflict upon billions of sentient beings in the 21st century. With a growing array of plant based alternatives that don't involve the avoidable and agonizing theft of someone else's life, compassion to animals is a moral imperative. There is no "humane" way to needlessly reduce someone else's life and value to their exploitation, dismemberment & death. Veganism is the best and most effective moral, ethical, economic, environmental, and compassionate stance against needless exploitation, abuse, and killing of other sentient beings. By being vegan, I am contributing toward a more peaceful and tranquil future for all Earthlings, and wish to educate others so that they may join me and the thousands of other vegans globally in fighting for the fundamental rights of animals, the conservation of the environment, and the peace between each other. 4) VRG 2018 VEGETARIAN SCHOLARSHIP WINNER NATALIA GOSIACO

The Vegetarian Resource Group 2018 college scholarship winner Natalia Gosiaco reports that her first semester was great. "I have been meeting so many new people involved within the vegan community, and San Diego State has given me so many opportunities to further pursue my passions. I joined the Voice for Veg animal rights club a few weeks into school, as soon as I found out about it. I attend the meetings once a week, along with events that we do. Such events include outreaches, educational seminars, supporting campaigns, and making merchandise, all to promote animal rights and veganism. I also got the opportunity to do a ten minute speech in my communications class this semester, and I chose to address why I do not drink cow's milk, and why no one ever should. The speech went very well and I got a lot of positive feedback and questions. Many people told me they weren't about to drink milk after listening to what I had to say."

"This semester, I also reached out to the head of Sodexo at my old high school to check in with the vegan options being made available for students. She and I talked for awhile, and she assured me that she is continuing to provide vegan options everyday. She also told me that the vegan options are often a hit and sell out before the other dish! I told her that I am grateful for her persistence to incorporate meals that accommodate for everyone, and that I am always just a phone call or email away. I continue to email her ideas I have of easy vegan meal options, or grab and go snacks.

"I am continuing to work at the Lovin Oven, a 100% vegan pizza restaurant. Working as a server gives me a great platform to talk to customers about veganism and why I am vegan. It helps that they're eating delicious vegan food too!"

Koshary, Pronounced Ko-sha-ry, Egypt's national dish. A grain bowl high in plant-based protein and fiber made out of rice, lentils, pasta, chickpeas, signature sauce and fried onions. We wanted everyone to enjoy this meal so we made sure it's 100% vegan and gluten free.

Koshary originated in India as a rice and lentils bowl. It then Traveled to England where it was enjoyed as a breakfast meal. Eventually it landed in Egypt with the British occupation in the 19th century where it became a power house meal that locals line up to at every corner. Next to the signature dish we will be serving some very popular Egyptian food items including falafel (Ta`meya).

13) FDA ASKS FOR INPUT ON USE OF THE NAMES OF DAIRY FOODS IN LABELING PLANT-BASED PRODUCTS - DEADLINE TO COMMENT EXTENDED BY 60 DAYS

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is soliciting public input to answer the following questions:
How do you use plant-based products?

What is your understanding of dairy terms like milk, yogurt and cheese when they are used to label plant-based products?

Do you understand the nutritional characteristics of plant-based products? Do you know how they're different from each other? Do you know how their nutritional qualities compare with dairy products?

Over the next year, the FDA will be looking at next steps, which will include issuing guidance for industry. This would clarify FDA's thinking regarding the labeling of plant-based products with names that include the names of dairy foods while giving manufacturers adequate notice about any changes.

To submit electronic comments, go to:

14) VRG HIGHLIGHTS

In response to inquiries, VRG's Research Director Jeanne Yacobou did some follow-up research on Xanthan gum and other ingredients.

We assisted a member working on getting vegan meals to be offered at a local hot meal program serving the hungry and formerly homeless.

We sent about 400 magazines, 80 bumper stickers, and several books to various vegan events and fundraisers across the country.

We'd also like to give a special thank you to Karen Peissinger, who coordinated a VRG booth at the Buffalo Vegan Pop-Up Market. Pamphlets regarding pregnancy/childhood and teenage vegan nutrition were very popular, as were the coloring books and Vegan in a Nutshell printouts. At the end of the market, the remaining coloring books, and a handful of various print-outs and pamphlets were given to the Vegan Grocery Store. One of the owners expressed great appreciation for these resources as they educate customers who are curious about or starting their vegan journey. People appreciated the fact that VRG publishes information that is based on scientific research and that is reviewed or written by registered dietitians/nutritionists.
