5) MY EXPERIENCE AS A VEGETARIAN RESOURCE GROUP VOLUNTEER

By Angélique Complainville

At the end of last Summer as I was about to start the most intense year of my academic career I needed something to look forward to. I was looking for things to do during the summer of 2018 when I came across The Vegetarian Resource Group website and saw that they were looking for volunteers. I wasn’t very hopeful that I would be able to volunteer considering English wasn’t my mother tongue (I am French) and I would only be able to stay for 3 weeks. But after reading about their mission and what past interns had to say about their experience I knew I had to take a chance/at least try. So, I emailed Charles, one of the Co-Coordinators, and he said that I could come and volunteer and he was so helpful.

Fast forward to the 11th of July when I landed in Baltimore and met Charles and Debra, the co- coordinators. They were both so welcoming, asking me questions and showing me the different streets in Baltimore as they drove me to where I would be staying. The next day I started my volunteering with a tour of The Vegetarian Resource Group office where Charles told me about how they went from a grassroots organization to the national nonprofit they are today. He gave me copies of all the books they had written and published as well as all the educational pamphlets the organization has created over the years. I actually recognized one I had used when I first went vegan called “Vegan Diets in a Nutshell.” As a future business student, it was really interesting talking to Charles about the business aspect of running a nonprofit as I possibly want to work at one once I finish college.

I volunteered for 3 weeks and I think that what made this volunteer experience so fun was all the projects I got to work on. I wrote two articles that related to France and veganism. I loved working with Debra on those because she was so encouraging and always had fun stories to tell. My favorite project was definitely the cooking video I did with Amy, a fellow intern turned friend. We spent the day filming and laughing especially while making crêpes. Every single week I had new projects to work on that were very diverse, from writing an article to running a booth through filming a cooking video. There never was a dull moment.

Also, on one of my last days, the VRG received new vegan products to review. I was so happy to have the opportunity to try new vegan products because we don’t have that many in France. I got to try vegan pot pies by Alpha Foods and write a review on them and let me tell you I wish I could smuggle them home because they were so yummy. It was a really fun moment because we all went to the kitchen and tried them, as well as some nutritional yeast sasonings that Amy was reviewing.

I really enjoyed my time as a VRG volunteer because I made some great connections with other vegans, which is terrific considering I don’t have this opportunity in France. I love that Debra and Charles gave me projects that suit my interests. They really make each volunteer experience so unique. Even though I only interned for three weeks contrary to some volunteers who work there for months, I still feel that I got the full nonprofit experience. Everyone I worked with made my time here that much more special. If you are thinking about volunteering with the VRG, do it. They will welcome you with open arms.

6) TENTH ANNUAL DC VEGFEST BRINGING FOOD AND FUN TO YARDS PARK SEPTEMBER 15

Washington, DC - July 24, 2018 - Compassion Over Killing is proud to present the 10th annual DC VegFest on Saturday, September 15, 2018. Hosted outdoors at famed Yards Park in the nation’s capital, the DC VegFest is a free fun-filled festival of food, music, education, and inspiration with more than 20,000 attendees who join the celebration each year.

Featuring over 120 vendors and exhibitors, thousands of festival-goers - vegans and pre-vegans alike - will experience plant-based eating’s many flavors, and learn how each of us can protect the planet, our health, and animals simply by enjoying vegan meals.

On the main stage, emceed by rapper Grey, celebrity speakers will share inspiring talks and expert chefs will dazzle the crowd with their culinary creations.

This year’s DC VegFest keynote speakers include:

  • Carol Adams (Author & Activist) and Ginny Messina (Registered Dietitian & Author)
  • Joe Yonan (Food and Dining Editor, The Washington Post)
  • Tracye McQuirter (30-Year Vegan, Author, Public Health Nutritionist)
  • Dr. Neal Barnard (President, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine)
  • Jerri Evans (Owner, Turning Natural)
  • Beverly Kumari (Cookbook Author and Chef)
  • Mike Wolf (Director of Investigations, Compassion Over Killing)
  • Chef Nikki (Chef, Activist, and Fitness Competitor)

A new TryVeg tasting booth will be hosted by Jessica Carter, COK's talented Vegan Food & Lifestyle Coach, seen often on DC morning shows. The Kid’s Zone will have interactive activities including storytime, a cooking demo, and a talk by author Eric Lindstrom, COK’s Director of Marketing.

Popular local restaurant chain Busboys and Poets will host the Beer Garden and Music Tent with local brews and musicians. Tails will be wagging in the shaded Barking Lot sponsored and operated by Humane Rescue Alliance, which will also have adoptable animals on site.

"Since 2009, DC VegFest has been bringing the community together, through fun and flavors, for a day of compassionate celebration that pre-vegans and vegans can all enjoy," says Erica Meier, Executive Director of Compassion Over Killing.

"As we mark our 10th annual DC VegFest, expecting 25,000 to join us, Compassion Over Killing is thrilled that Washington, DC is home to an abundance of delicious and nutritious plant-based food and, as the nation's capital, is setting a positive tone for a much-needed national dialogue about the far-reaching impact of our food choices on the planet, our health, and animals," Meier adds.

Vegan food will be served by dozens of vendors including Vegan Treats, Amsterdam Falafelshop, Brewing Good Coffee, Bakeshop DC, Revolution Gelato, and YogiDog.

Over 100 nonprofit and commercial exhibitors will set up shop for the day: Dr. Bronner's, A Well-Fed World, Roots Market, Barnard Medical Center, TryVeg.com, and many more.

Drawing a line of 2,000 people before the start of the festival, free commemorative tote bags, stocked with gifts and samples from our sponsors, will be given out to the first 1,000 attendees. For more information, visit [ https://DCVegFest.com ]

7) OREGON STUDENT RECEIVES $5,000 VEGETARIAN RESOURCE GROUP COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP

Maggie Salter started on her path to vegetarianism at ten years old, as she started learning about the "secrets hidden behind pristinely packaged animal products."

In her freshman year of high school, she became part of an animal rights club. Then she and others in the club met students from a different high school with similar interests. Maggie said, "We were all strangers, connected only by our passion for animals and a hope to be part of something bigger than ourselves." Because they felt there was a lack of support for young people, they came together and formed Youth for the Voiceless. Maggie was co-chair of the communications team. Maggie stated, "From going to animal rights marches and protests - and being the only person there under 30 ... it was obvious we had a job to do as young adults and advocates to fill the gap."

The advisor to the club said, "Without question, Maggie, a Youth For the Voiceless co-founder and board member, has served an absolutely crucial role in the evolution, growth, and increased momentum of this public charity. Simply said, YFV would not be where it is today without her. Whether tasked with determining best social media practices for a new non-profit to engaging in a conversation about how to most effectively conduct youth outreach, Maggie tackles every challenge with both logic and creativity, a rare combination and a true illustration of Maggie’s incredible aptitude."

One of Maggie's insights was when she went to her first vigil over the summer where they were bearing witness for cows on their way to slaughter. She stated, "All I can remember was watching all these activists with the best intentions run up to the truck, trying to get up to the front to take pictures and videos. It actually began to remind me of a zoo. I know these pictures and videos were to document the animals' suffering, the hands poking through the bars were all intended to show compassion, and all the tears shed were out of love, but these animals had already been through so much, and they've only known the worst of humans. So isn't it reasonable to believe they’d be afraid of us? Now don't get me wrong. I didn’t write this to take anything away from bearing witness or the activists that go because they are genuinely some of the strongest people out there, but when done in the wrong ways, I think we can accidentally cause more distress than comfort ... I write this "to show that we might not all have the same experience, and that we might not all take away the same thing. You can't base what you’re supposed to feel or think on someone else's experience. Take everything with a grain of salt because it’s okay to feel things differently from someone else. Lastly, I just want you to remember we are there for the animals so we need to not get wrapped up in what we think we’re supposed to be doing."

Because of organizing vegan taste tests at her high school for non vegetarian/vegan kids to see how good vegan food really can be, and her experiences in Youth For the Voiceless, creating content, helping to design the website, and working on their social media presence, Maggie hopes to continue being part of the movement after college by studying communications. She says, "This scholarship would help me pursue my dreams to continue being an activist for years to come and allow me to get an education that can help me achieve my goals.

8) MUSIC VIDEO AGAINST ANIMAL VIOLENCE

Ola Arent wrote to The VRG: With a musician named Lou Terry we've been working on a collaborative music video against animal violence where we tackle issues of fishing, dog mistreatment and fox hunting. We approach the topic in a way that is not directly violent, yet hopefully moves the hearts of the public and makes them rethink their cohabitation with animals.
