1) NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Thank you to all the students who sent in entries for The Vegetarian Resource Group's $30,000 in college scholarships for high school seniors, as well as donors and readers that supported this project. The kids are all amazing and everyone deserves to win. Thank you to donors who enabled us to give two more scholarships to New York City area residents, so this year we gave five awards. You can see links to the scholarship winners below. Welcome to our virtual EMW summer interns Julia Comino from Mississippi and Nadely Requena from Texas. Julia is returning from last summer. You can see her experience here.
https://www.vrg.org/blog/2021/07/27/my-experience-as-an-eleanor-miltimore-wolff-virtual-intern-with-the-vegetarian-resource-group/ ]

Nadely already attended VRG's in-service in May for University of Maryland dietetic interns who are working towards their registered dietitian certification. Nadely will be writing up the experience for our blog, and we'll post the link in the next newsletter. There's so much to be sad about in the news. Thank you for our interns and scholarship applicants and winners, who give us hope for the future.

5) VRG HIGHLIGHTS

The Vegetarian Resource Group did an in-service for ten University of Maryland Dietetic Students. They already have their undergrad nutrition degree, but are doing their one year training towards registered dietitian certification. Thank you to Reed Mangels who shared evidence-based information about raising vegan children, and Whitney (a former VRG intern who now has two vegan toddlers) shared practical tips about vegan foods for kids. Another former VRG intern Odette Olivares gave out information on traditional vegan Latino foods that are good sources of calcium. See [ https://www.vrg.org/journal/vj2021issue2/2021_issue2_latin_american_calcium.php ] . In addition, volunteer Chen Zeng, graduating with a food technology degree from Cornell, gave out info on vegan Asian dishes.

Cierra Peterlin did a one week rotation with us while in her dietetic internship program. See her experience at [ https://www.vrg.org/blog/2022/05/16/a-perfect-week-for-a-vegan-dietetic-intern/ ]

We awarded $30,000 in college scholarships to students who promoted veg diets.

VRG did a new 2022 poll on the number of vegetarians and vegans. We also asked how many people think cell cultured meat and dairy should be labeled plant-based, vegan, vegetarian, or animal-free. These answers help us as we give testimony on labeling questions for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food and Drug Administration, and others that are asking us questions about this issue.

See poll results here: [ https://www.vrg.org/nutshell/CulturedMeatYouGov2022.pdf ]

VRG sent 1,000 each Heart Healthy Eating and Vegan Diets in a Nutshell brochures plus 500 Save Our Water The Vegetarian Way for Earth Day and other leafleting in the New York City area.

Vegan Journal Senior Editor Rissa Miller appeared on Unchained TV Naijha Speaks segment. Rissa made savory Red Curry Rolls. This show is hosted by Naijha Wright-Brown - the co-owner of Land of Kush vegan restaurant.

VRG Nutrition Advisor Reed Mangels PHD, RD recently had the opportunity to work with other professionals on a publication aimed at health professionals which discussed vegan and vegetarian diets. The goals in developing this paper were to provide guidelines on nutrition, to address the environmental benefits of significantly reducing or eliminating animal products, to inform readers about vegan and vegetarian diets during the life cycle and for athletic performance, and to provide an update on use of vegan and vegetarian diets to manage chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Another VRG advisor, Enette Larson-Meyer, PhD, RD, also worked on this paper. The 30-page paper was published in November 2021 in a professional journal called Nutrients. It was based on an extensive review of the scientific literature and included more than 300 citations. It is an open access paper which means that it can be downloaded and read, with no charge, even if you don't subscribe to the journal where it appeared. See [ https://www.vrg.org/blog/2022/04/26/vegetarian-diets-guidelines-for-health-professional/ ]

VRG is scheduled to exhibit at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic Annual Conference FNCE in fall 2022 in Orlando.

12) INFANT FORMULA SHORTAGE, COW'S MILK AND SOY MILK

Recently on the American Academy of Pediatrics [ https://healthychildren.org ] it was stated that if your child is older than 6 months and is usually on regular formula, in a pinch you could feed them whole cow's milk for a brief period of time. They added that this is not ideal and should not become routine.

The article also said, "Soy milk may be an option to give babies who are close to a year of age for a few days in an emergency, but always buy the kind that is fortified with protein and calcium. Make sure to change back to formula as soon as some is available. Be especially careful to avoid almond milk or other plant milks as these are often low in protein and minerals."

We were wondering if they were giving different time recommendations for cow's milk and soy milk, so VRG Nutrition Advisor Reed Mangels contacted them. The response was that soy milk time would not be any different than cow's milk. Both would have the same guidance. We noticed the AAP website now says cow's milk should be for "a brief period of time (no more than a week)," and soy milk should be used "not for more than one week."
