6) VRG HIGHLIGHTS

We had six winners in our 2020 video contest. See all the videos here:
https://www.vrg.org/veg_videos.php ]

At a virtual meeting, Elsa Spencer, PhD (nutrition) spoke about vegan nutrition to a student group at Northern Virginia Community College. She said it went quite well and they met for an hour. Elsa also said "None of them were vegans and one or two were vegetarians. Several expressed interest in veganism before and during the talk but none felt "ready." We had health, ethical, cooking, and practical questions. They had questions ready when I arrived, and asked for links when I mentioned topics they didn't know about. I sent some links right after the talk to the club organizer. They were very grateful."

We did a virtual booth at virtual American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics FNCE conference. Dietitians staffing the booth included: Reed Mangels, Cathy Conway, Julie Covington, and Eric Sharer, as well as Elsa Spencer (PhD in nutrition). Not the same as physically interacting with people, but it was still impactful. We had 1,268 visitors come by the booth. This only counts each person once. For example, though one person was in and out of the booth 17 times over about five days, she is only added to the count once. (Editor's note: FNCE stands for Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo.) A few nice notes in the chat such as:

Good morning, I have been reviewing all the information provided by this group. You all have some great information! After FNCE, (is there access to the webpage links provided at the expo such as "Ingredients are they Vegan" or Vegetarian Nutrition with links to patient education handouts?)

Great resource. Big fan. Thank you for being here at FNCE.

Hi I just wanted to share I've been a fan for years, especially for using your vegan iron sources handout. Thank you!

Just signed up. I am a State Coordinator and met with you last year when you came for the presentation

We asked the following questions in a national Harris Poll:

1. What Do American Adults Expect from a Beverage Labeled Soymilk?
https://www.vrg.org/blog/2020/10/30/what-do-american-adults-expect-from-a-beverage-labeled-soymilk-questions-asked-by-the-vegetarian-resource-group-in-a-national-poll/ ]

2. When Making Decisions about Food, Is Your Ethics at Least One Consideration?
https://www.vrg.org/blog/2020/11/17/when-making-decisions-about-food-is-your-ethics-at-least-one-consideration-question-asked-by-vrg-in-a-national-poll/ ]

To help support the Vegetarians of Central Florida's Raffle, we donated five Vegetarian Journal subscriptions, two Vegans Know How to Party and two Simply Vegan books.

We continue to mail vegan/vegetarian dietary information to Prison Inmates across the USA.

10) CHARITABLE IRA ROLLOVER

Donors who are over 70½ may want to use the charitable IRA rollover. The charitable IRA rollover is a distribution from an individual retirement account directly to a charity, such as The Vegetarian Resource Group. The distribution from the plan administrator directly to the charity counts toward the donor's required minimum distribution for the year, but the charitable donation is not included in the donor's adjusted gross income. The CARES Act waives the required minimum distributions during 2020 for IRAs and retirement plans. See Publication 590-B, Distributions from Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs)] for additional information.

A new law:

  • 1. Increases the age for IRA required minimum distributions from 70½ to 72.
  • 2. Preserves the IRA charitable rollover for individuals age 70½ or older.

11) WISH LIST

As a non-profit, we can only take on new projects when we are able to get support from donors and our dedicated volunteers. Right now, we are seeking your support for the following:

Donate to the Vegetarian Resource Group through the Combined Federal Campaign. For federal workers who would like to donate to The Vegetarian Resource Group through the Combined Federal Campaign, our CFC number is #10601.

Ever consider donating stock to the VRG? Donating stock directly to the VRG may save on taxes.
More information is available here:
https://www.vrg.org/blog/2020/05/26/donating-stock-to-the-vegetarian-resource-group/ ]

Have you wanted to make a gift in honor of a loved one, friend or colleague, but weren't sure which charities were vegan, pro-environment or pro-animal rights? Consider a donation to the VRG as a memorial for a loved one, or way to honor someone's actions with a living tribute. This is perfect for special occasions, such as a wedding, birthday, anniversary or retirement. We will send an acknowledgment to you and the giftee, and your kindness will support our educational outreach programs and help promote veganism. [ https://www.vrg.org/memandhon.htm ]

12) BEQUESTS

The VRG depends on the generous contributions of our members and supporters to continue our educational projects. Though the world may not become vegan in our lifetime, we realize we are planning and working for future generations. Your will and life insurance policies enable you to protect your family, and also to provide a way to give long-lasting support to causes in which you believe. Naming The Vegetarian Resource Group in your will or life insurance policy will enable us to increase our work towards a vegan world.

One suggested form of bequest is: I give and bequeath to The Vegetarian Resource Group, Baltimore, Maryland, the sum of __________ dollars (or if stock, property, or insurance policy, please describe).

To be sure your wishes are carried out, be sure to speak with your attorney specifically about writing the correct information into your will.
