3) VEGETARIAN VIDEO SCHOLARSHIP

The Vegetarian Resource Group is once again this year holding a video contest. This is your chance to create and submit a video telling others about veganism. We will be awarding one $200.00 scholarship and two $100.00 awards. Some possible topics include food, nutrition, your feelings about veganism, water usage and veganism, veganism and animal rights, or other vegan topics that appeal to you.

Videos will be judged on, among other things, accuracy of the information provided and the judges' desire to share the video with others. Humor and feelings are appreciated. All videos should be positive, not be critical of anyone, and not include any footage of animal cruelty. You may submit a video you have already made.

Submission Deadline: July 15, 2020

8) THE VEGETARIAN RESOURCE GROUP TESTIMONY

Food Standards; General Principles and Food Standards Modernization

The Vegetarian Resource Group sent the following testimony to the FDA:
We welcome the opportunity to comment on Food Standards: General Principles and Food Standards Modernization. We commend FDA for their commitment to protecting consumers against economic adulteration; maintaining the nutritional integrity of food; and providing flexibility to encourage manufacturers to produce more healthful foods.

As a consumer organization, we also prioritize providing clear, helpful label information that consumers can use to make an informed choice and to be able to find the foods that they are looking for. We believe that FDA principles 2, 6, and 8 should be revised to better reflect the needs of the consumer.

You can find the full text of the testimony here: [ https://www.vrg.org/blog/2020/04/16/food-standards-general-principles-and-food-standards-modernization-the-vegetarian-resource-group-testimony/ ]

10) BEQUESTS

The VRG depends on the generous contributions of our members and supporters to continue our educational projects. Though the world may not become vegan in our lifetime, we realize we are planning and working for future generations. Your will and life insurance policies enable you to protect your family, and also to provide a way to give long-lasting support to causes in which you believe. Naming The Vegetarian Resource Group in your will or life insurance policy will enable us to increase our work towards a vegan world.

One suggested form of bequest is: I give and bequeath to The Vegetarian Resource Group, Baltimore, Maryland, the sum of ___ dollars (or if stock, property, or insurance policy, please describe).

To be sure your wishes are carried out, speak with your attorney specifically about writing the correct information into your will.

11) VRG HIGHLIGHTS

The Vegetarian Resource Group has been hectic and busy working virtually during the coronavirus restrictions. VRG submitted testimony to the U.S.D.A. on school lunch, and to The Food and Drug Administration concerning General Principles for Food Standards Modernization (for example related to whether soy milk or almond milk could be called milk.) We are composing testimony related to the new Dietary Guidelines.

Though working in facilities with coronavirus, dietitians Casey and Nancy in between being at their jobs, worked on articles for us on the newer meat-like burgers and helpful tips for food services in residential facilities that receive requests to serve one or two vegans. VRG's Nutrition Advisor Reed Mangels assisted a dietetic student intern in South Carolina whose work placement was cut short, but was able to complete a project with us towards her internship requirements to receive her registered dietitian certification. See her article on our blog about how vegan patients can work with hospital staff to receive vegan food.

While reviewing Casey's meat-like burger article, we were looking at B12 content, and saw that most veggie burgers were not fortified with the nutrient. That led us to update our chart of nutritional yeast and which have and don't have B12. This is online and in the next edition of Vegetarian Journal. Because of change in percentage of daily value, and various companies used new figures and other companies old figures, some calculations become a little confusing.

Emilio continued to coordinate volunteers around the country, who were judging the 280 applications for our college scholarship contest. These kids have done such great work. It makes us sad we can't give more awards, but does give us hope in these troubling times how much young people are doing. We discussed how our annual summer needs based paid intern could work virtually. And our editor Rissa kept the Vegetarian Journal on time, which marks 38 years, even through 9-11, that we haven't missed an issue. Thank you Jason (IT) with giving us long distance assistance, as well as all our volunteers around the country.

On our Facebook and blog we mentioned vegan restaurants in the U.S. that stayed open and were doing takeout during the coronavirus restrictions. If you are financially able to do so, please support them by buying meals, as you might during other times.
