EARTHSAVE NEWS & EVENTS

Govan's Presbyterian Church, Baltimore, MD

We're sad to report that a gas leak caused an explosion that destroyed much of the shopping and office complex that houses one of our favorite restaurants in Columbia, MD. Luckily, it happened in the early morning hours and didn't cause any injuries. But the Mango Grove Restaurant will be closed until further notice, while repairs are underway.

We have a wonderful venue for our Earthsave events - Govans Presbyterian Church is in a quiet neighborhood, next to the historic Senator Theater on York Road in Baltimore. The church parking lot is spacious, well lit, and conveniently located near the entry to the Fellowship Hall, where you will see our large Earthsave banner. Hope you will join us there soon!

You might also like to join one of the two discussion groups that Earthsave hosts at local restaurants. Check out the Baltimore Vegetarian Meetup [ https://www.meetup.com/vegetarian-9/ ] and Baltimore Vegan Meetup group [ https://www.meetup.com/The-Baltimore-Vegan-Meetup-Group/ ] and join us when you can!

10) THE VEGETARIAN RESOURCE GROUP'S 2019 VIDEO CONTEST WINNER: GO VEGAN TO SAVE THE TREES

Dayana Love was a 2019 Vegetarian Resource Group video contest winner, and said:
I am interested in veganism for multiple reasons. First is my health. I've watched multiple documentaries on the harmful effects that animal products have on your body. I feel that the only logical step for me to take is to cut it out of my diet. Second, I am very passionate about the environment and after learning about the negative effects livestock production has made me eager to switch to a vegan diet. Finally, I am a huge animal lover! and would like to align my diet with my values.

The deadline for the next video contest is JULY 15, 2020.

11) VRG OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR GRADUATING HS SENIORS

Due to the generosity of an anonymous donor, The Vegetarian Resource Group each year will award $20,000 in college scholarship money to graduating U.S. high school students who have promoted vegetarianism in their schools and/or communities. Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or fowl. Vegans are vegetarians who do not use other animal products such as dairy or eggs.

One award of $10,000 and two awards of $5,000 will be given. Entries may only be sent by students graduating from high school in SPRING 2020.

Deadline is FEBRUARY 20, 2020. We will accept applications postmarked on or before FEBRUARY 20, 2020. Early submission is encouraged.

Applicants will be judged on having shown compassion, courage, and a strong commitment to promoting a peaceful world through a vegetarian diet/lifestyle. Payment will be made to the student's college (U.S. based only). Winners of the scholarships give permission to release their names to the media. Applications and essays become property of The Vegetarian Resource Group. We may ask finalists for more information. Scholarship winners are contacted by e-mail or telephone.

12) VRG HIGHLIGHTS

We'd like to extend an extra special thank-you to volunteer Marcy Schveibinz, who tabled at the Oracle Employee Health and Wellness Fair and ran a cooking demo at Howard Community College on behalf of VRG. Her tireless efforts on our behalf have been invaluable to our organization.

Karen Peissinger tabled for us at the Buffalo Vegan Pop-up Market. Karen's hard work in the Buffalo area helps us get our message out there into Western New York!

A little further east in New York, we'd like to extend a special thank you to Terry Carlo, who has been the driving force behind us maintaining a presence at the Albany VegFest year after year (including this one!), so thank you for that.

VRG attended the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) hearing on Horizontal Approaches to Food Standards of Identity Modernization. Though there are over 280 standards, of interest to VRG members may be whether plant-based products can be labeled meat or milk (such as almond milk). We will be submitting testimony on the issue.

In October we gave out information to over 1,000 dietitians and heath professionals at the annual meeting of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in Philadelphia, PA. We also hosted a vegan networking dinner for dietitians and our local members.

13) WISH LIST

As a non-profit, we can only take on new projects when we are able to get support from donors and our dedicated volunteers. Right now, we are seeking your support for the following:

We give away tens of thousands of leaflets, brochures, and flyers on vegetarianism every year both to activists and directly to the public. A donation of $100 can cover the printing of 1000 brochures, helping us help others spread valuable information about vegan and vegetarian lifestyles. You can give online at [ https://www.vrg.org/donate/ ]

Are you planning on taking advantage of a year-end auto sale? Instead of trading in that old car, why not donate it to VRG through the V-DAC program and turn that car into cash that supports our work: [ https://www.v-dac.com/org/?id=521279034 ]

Monthly and quarterly donors support our work, while allowing us to better budget by providing more predictable and steady funding. You can become a monthly or quarterly donor online here: [ https://www.vrg.org/donate ]
